All about chemical pregnancies

A chemical pregnancy is the clinical term used for a very early miscarriage. In many cases, the positive pregnancy test was achieved before your period was due but a miscarriage occured before a sac or heartbeat was able to be seen on an ultrasound.

Chemical pregnancies are unfortunately very common. 50 to 60% of first pregnancies end in miscarriage very early in pregnancy. Many occur without the woman even knowing that she was pregnant, but this is not always the case.

What causes a chemical pregnancy?

Most chemical pregnancies are due to chromosomal problems in the developing fetus. Other possible causes are inadequate uterine lining, uterine abnormalities both congenital or acquired like fibroids, low hormone levels, luteal phase defect, possible immunological causes or certain infections.

How can I prevent chemical pregnancies?

Most chemical pregnancies can not be prevented. If you have recurring chemical pregnancies, your doctor should be able to investigate and help you formulate a treatment which is best for you. Potential treatments include vitamin B6 (at least 50mg a day), progesterone cream or supplementation, estrogen supplementation, immunological treatments, and baby asprin. Be sure to discuss potential testing and treatment with your doctor.

How should I feel about having a chemical pregnancy?

After having a chemical pregnancy many women are surprised by how sad they feel, even though they only knew of the pregnancy for a few days or a week.  However, experiencing these feelings of deep grief is completely normal.  While you may not experience the same physical symptoms of a later miscarriage, you are still mourning the loss of the dream of that baby.  When you saw those lines on the pregnancy test you thought, “I’m pregnant!!” and began to connect with your baby, even if it was taken away from you so quickly.  Do not be ashamed or embarrassed about your feelings.  Allow yourself to experience and sort through your grief as you need to.

How long do I have to wait to try again after a chemical pregnancy?

Different doctors will tell you different things, but generally they advise that you wait one full cycle (until after your next, regular period) to try again.  We didn’t wait after our first chemical pregnancy and I ended up getting pregnant again before my next period came, and that pregnancy was successful.  HOWEVER, after my 2nd chemical pregnancy, we decided not to wait because of what happened the first time, and I ended up having my 3rd chemical pregnancy.  So, I would recommend that you follow your doctor’s advice.  I can’t tell you how often I beat myself up and wonder if I caused the 3rd loss by not waiting.

Will I be able to have a healthy pregnancy after a chemical pregnancy?

While there are no guarantees, the good news is that the vast majority of women go on to have healthy pregnancies following a chemical pregnancy.  My first pregnancy was a chemical pregnancy, and then I immediately became pregnant again and gave birth to my son.  My bigger troubles have begun while trying to have a second child, but I did go on to have one healthy child after my first chemical pregnancy.

Hello, I have a question about what I am experiencing now, actually I have been going through it for about a month and a half. My last period was on May 25th. I had sex 11 days before my period was due, so since it was due on June 25th, (my periods are ALWAYS regular. Either early or on time. Never late) I had sex June 15th. Anyway, I missed my period last month. On June 28th, I started spotting. I know it was spotting because I have a baby already & I spotted when I was pregnant with him so I know what it looks like. I spotted for about 3 days. After that, no more bleeding. I took 2 pregnancy tests, both came up a faint positive. I wasn’t really sure if it was a faint line, but I showed my mom & she seen it as well. I went to the doctor’s few days after that, they did a pregnancy test on me, urine & blood test, & both came up negative. They said I COULD have had a chemical pregnancy, but they weren’t sure. I was mad that they had no real answers to give me, and couldn’t explain anything the correct way. Now, July 25th, I still didn’t get my period. I have all of the symptoms of pregnancy, I know what they are because like I said I’ve been pregnant before. WHAT is going on?? Can someone help me and maybe tell me your opinion on what you think is happening to me? Please email me to let me know..email is jennifer_ferlaino@yahoo.com Thank you soo much!

I don’t understand any of this. I think I’m having a chemical pregnancy right now! My last period was the 1st I ovulated the 12 tested the 20th and the 21 st both faint positives tested after that and nothing but got sick twice on the 25th and then today which is the 27th I started but this feels way different than a period. And it feels way more painful than a normal period. Been off birth control for two months now! Please tell me what’s going on and how possiable is it that this will happen every time my future husband and I try to conceive? This is hurting both or us… He felt like something is Wong with him and now it’s starting to make me feel that way about myself. 😦 any suggestions would be great. Thank you!

  3. Angel says:

Thank you for your responce! Should I test again? This is not a normal period. I feel very nasouse, I have never felt that way on my period ever. I feel like I hav the flu. I have no real idea what my normal periods are after being off birth control. I have been on birth control since 16!

    • rowanthefrog says:

Have you been to the OB? If you aren’t getting any lines on a pregnancy test anymore then chances are your HCG levels will be very low or back to 0, but if you want you can have the OB do a blood test to find out for sure. I was on birth control for over 15 years as well.

  4. Angel says:

No I have not been! I will be soon! Ill tell my dr. About this! 😉 thank you again! 🙂

Hi, I’ve been on your blog a bit over the past few months. I have a 25 month old son and have had 3 chemical pregnancies in the past 7 months. I am 34 years old and went to a RE for the first time today. I am devastated. My OB said that all my bloodwork and tests looked fine, but the RE said that my eggs are more like a 40 year old than a 34 year old. My AFC is 8 and my AMH is .94. I told him that I wanted the least invasive thing possible and he basically only suggested IVF or IUI. I told him that I was really hoping that he would prescribe me baby aspirin and progesterone and he said that there was nothing that he could put me on to help me. I like to do everything very natural and we don’t have money for those things. Have you come across anything like this before? I think that we need to get a second opinion. Thank you for providing some information on a very obscure topic.

    • rowanthefrog says:

      Rachel,

I’m so sorry to hear what you have been going through. Its so tough. Have you considered seeing a different RE? I think REs are very quick to jump to IUI/IVF..it gives them the most control and they know they have a good success rate with it, but its just not for everyone and its a pretty extreme measure. I saw 3 different REs before I found one that would examine MY history and listen to me, not lump me in a box and shove the easiest protocol for them down my throat.

Did you see the protocol that worked for me? It required a few pills and a few shots but all in all it didn’t cost too much and my second son is proof that it worked.

I agree you should get a second opinion. Best of luck, please keep us posted.

I’m going through my second chemical pregnancy as I write this..I’m 11dpo had positive hpts now a negative. Have had successful pregnancys before and I felt so hopeful this time round now i feel so defeated, it sucks I feel like giving up.

    • rowanthefrog says:

Don’t give up. I’m so so sorry. It just sucks. I hope you find some answers and some hope here. Keep us posted!

  7. Rachel says:

Thought I’d follow up from my last comment. After my awful visit with the first RE, I found a second RE that was willing to help me. AND he did my tests and found out that my AFC was actually 17, not the 8 that the other dr. said.

I tried one round of drugs and they didn’t work (femara, hcg, then progesterone). The next cycle I did an HSG to see if there was anything wrong with my tubes. Well, the HSG cleared me out (there wasn’t anything wrong) and I got pregnant that cycle. I am now 17 weeks pregnant!

I wanted to share my story, because I understand the pain that everyone who comes to this blog is in. I hope that you don’t have to go through another chemical pregnancy before you are successfully pregnant!

    • rowanthefrog says:

Just had my second chemical pregnancy miscarriage. My first was 2 years ago exactly. The following month (may) we conceived our second child who is now 15 months. I went to my mid wife today and she told me to wait one full cycle before trying to conceive. (This pregnancy was unplanned but welcomed). I’m very emotional and unsure if I want to wait. I hadn’t realized how much I wanted another baby until today when I lost this one.
But I’m nervous as well. Ugh

    • rowanthefrog says:

I’m so sorry for your losses. Its so hard, even if you weren’t planning on it. In my honest opinion, I would wait one cycle. I didn’t wait one time, and I got successfully pregnant and that was awesome. But the next time I didn’t wait and I miscarried again. A part of me blames myself for that third loss, I wonder if I had waited if things would have turned out differently. Of course you can’t go back, but the guilt of that has eaten at me.

Hang in there, hope your most recent loss was your last and you are successfully pregnant soon.

Hi. I am now going thru my 3rd chemical preg in the passed year and I am so sad. I have a daughter who will be 3 in october but we want more children. I understand 1 happening and I was still hopeful but now after 2 more, I am losing all hope and really I am afraid to try again. I dont want to go thru this pain yet another time. Just needed someone that is familiar with this to talk to. Others mean well but they just dont know.

    • rowanthefrog says:

      Crystal,

I’m so sorry to hear of your losses. I can definitely relate to what you are feeling. Have you had any tests run? Your OB can order the Recurrent Pregnancy Loss panel. Its just a blood test that tests for a variety of issues and it may be a starting point for you. You might want to ask about that. Please keep me posted on your progress!

I too am experiencing a chemical pregnancy right now and can understand the emotional pain you have experienced. I was 5 days late so tested & got a bfp on 17dpo & again on 18dpo. I was so happy! The next day (yesterday) I started feeling crampy & took another hpt (as I wanted to see it turn positive one more time!) and it was a very faint positive. I instantly knew something was wrong. By that afternoon I started bleeding & felt devastated. I am 34 & dh is 33. We have a 8yr old dd (that we conceived on the first try btw) but would like to give her a sibling! I lost a pregnancy in march at 13weeks & have been ttc since. It has been so hard & I feel myself getting more depressed each month that I don’t succeed. I don’t feel like I have much time. There will already be a huge age gap between my dd & a new baby. The worst part is I’m a labor & delivery RN so I get to see women deliver healthy babies every day that weren’t even ttc and sometimes act as if they could care less about their new baby. Its so hard not to ask “what am I doing wrong? Why is this happening again? And most importantly “When will it be my turn?” Ive heard that you have good odds of conceiving after a loss so im hoping this next cycle will be the one! I would like to wish anyone reading this the best of luck in your journey of ttc.

      Jennifer,

I’m so sorry for your losses. It is exceptionally frustrating and I’m sure its compounded by being around pregnant women all day long. I remember being in the gym after one of my losses and there was a pregnant woman exercising. I swear I was shooting daggers at her with my eyes I was so upset and jealous. And then I felt like a horrible person because how can you just hate someone for being pregnant? But I did and I hated feeling like that but I did. I had to remind myself that I have no idea what she went through to get pregnant. But I totally understand how upsetting and frustrating it is to be around someone who wasn’t even trying, when you want it so badly. Anyway, I understand and I’m so sorry. I hope your next cycle is it for you. Please keep us posted!

I am just going through a chemical pregnancy as we speak.. I already have a healthy child and feel thankful, but this was my first pregnancy with my new partner. even though we only found out a few days ago cant believe how sad and a failure i feel.. even though i know this is common i am still in disbelief over why this has happened this time.. I cant help worrying it is to do with having no periods on cerazette for the last year. We also didn’t wait for a full cycle to try after coming off cerazette? Think best to await a full cycle this time around and hopefully can be successful next time. Wish you all well…

    • rowanthefrog says:

I’m so sorry for your loss. It is shockingly difficult to go through, even though you have only known for a few days. I think waiting a full cycle would be a good idea. I hope your next pregnancy brings a healthy baby into your arms!

  12. S.W.C. says:

I am 36 years old and experienced my first pregnacy last month. It came as a shock to me because I honestly thought I would never conceive. I have hypothyroidism, a small pituitary tumor (which causes high prolactin levels), as of late a very short menstrual cycle (21-23 days) and my age is more against me than for me. Anyway I had breakthrough bleeding a week after my mense, it stopped and then a few days later I spotted again. I called my ob/gyn for an emergency appointment thinking the worst. I’d had an ovarian cyst fir o Ed 5 months that refused to go away and was coming off of a month of fasting (Ramadan) in which I had really messed up on my medication for my thyroid and small adenoma.

The doctor checked me for cancer (due to the cyst), my hormone levels (due to meds mishap) and for pregnancy (she stated my uterus was enlarged)… Oh yeah I forgot I have reoccurring fibroid tumors, hence my uterus is always enlarged. Either way a day after my appointment I got what I thought was my menses. I was in Walmart with my husband and begin to bleed heavily which is quite unusual for the first day of my cycle. I wasn’t in any real pain so I just went home and basically roughed it out. It was the weekend so my doctor’s office wasn’t open and I wasn’t quite sure it was an emergency (I mean I have had my menses for over 27 years regularly, it really was no surprise it came).. That Monday I received a call from my doctor staying my hormones were fine, the test for cancer was negative but my HCG levels were 137 which made my pregnancy test positive. I explained to her what occurred over the weekend and she plainly stated I experienced a miscarriage. She had me take another blood pregnacy test which came back negative and confirmed my chemical pregnacy. I am now 4 days late for my menses which comes anywhere from 21-23 days.. This is day 27… I have all the PMS which are also early pregnancy symptoms. I am thoroughly confused and basically scared to know if I am pregnant again or if my cycle is still recovering from the chemical pregnancy. Some may look at a miscarriage as a curse but I choose to see it as a blessing. I never thought I would experience the miracle of creating a life.. Even if only for a short span of time. Now I question, can this miracle occur again?

    • rowanthefrog says:

      S.W.C,

Thank you for posting and you have dealt with so much! It’s normal for your period to be a little late after a chemical pregnancy, so I wouldn’t worry too much. Your cycle probably is recovering from the miscarriage. Of course it’s impossible to predict the future, but if you got pregnant once I would say it could certainly happen again. I hope it does if that’s what you desire. Please keep us posted!

Hi, I am 34 years old, have a 17 month daughter, and have been TTC since I stopped breastfeeding 8 months ago. In that time, I have had 5 chemical pregnancies. How important is it to wait btween them to try again? I had a few cps before my daughter nd the Dr recommended baby aspirin and dhea to thicken lining/ improve egg quality. Have you herd of dhea? It worked…three months after taking it I got pregnant. I’m anxious to show the Dr the list of stuff you tried and were successful. How many cp’s did you have before conceiving? How is it going with #3? Sorry for all the questions…it is SO GOOD to know there are success stories out there. And…that we’re not alone 🙂 Thank you!!

        -S

      • rowanthefrog says:

        Shannon,

Congratulations on your successful pregnancy! I have heard of DHEA but not as something to assist with pregnancy. I’m going to look it up! I got successfully pregnant with my oldest son immediately after a CP, no period in between. But I also have had a CP, got pregnant again right away and then had another one. I’ve always blamed myself for that 3rd loss, wondering if I had waited if there would have been a different outcome. So I would recommend waiting at least one cycle after a CP, if for no other reason than saving yourself some heartache a personal guilt.

I had one CP before conceiving my oldest son, 3 CPs before conceiving my 2nd son and 1 m/c at 7.5 weeks before conceiving my third son. I just started my third trimester with this pregnancy and I’m incredibly relieved that this will be my last pregnancy ever and I won’t ever have to go through the anxiety and stress of early pregnancy again!!

Thanks for your comments and congrats again! Thanks for sharing your success!

Hello – I am so pleased to have found your blog. I have experienced chemical pregnancy before I had my second son. 2 actually. My period both times was a day late and then came (after getting positives). Now, I’m going through an odd situation. I had a Positive at 16DPO… subsequent tests came out negative. My period is now a week late. It seems as though the ”chemical pregnancy rejection’ seem to occur rather rapidly. If the ovum doesn’t stick, the body rejects a day or two afteror so it seems. So – if my ovum wasn’t sticky enough to give me another positive test, what’s happening here… I haven’t tested in a few days, simply because I do not want to spend money on disappointment.

I do not have health insurance but I do have a doula and a midwife. My midwife is telling me to keep hope and come in next week for another test. I’m so confused.

Congratulations on all of your success – and baby dust to the women above me! Thank you for such a touching and hopeful blog!

    • rowanthefrog says:

      Hi Ashley,

I’m so sorry to hear of your losses. I’ve had the quick positive turn negative situation as well. I’m honestly not really sure what to tell you. Usually your period will show up once your HCG levels get lower and approach zero. Hopefully you have gotten your period by now. If not, I’d probably wait another few weeks and if nothing happens still then I’d head to the doctor to have some hormone levels drawn. They may be able to give you something to make your period start.

So sorry, please keep us posted!

      Hi Marii,

I’m so sorry for what you have been going through. Did you get a positive pregnancy test? It’s tough to say whether or not you had a miscarriage unless you knew, for sure, that you were pregnant. I apologize for taking some time to respond, but the best way to know is to get a blood test from your doctor, but it might be too late. I hope that everything is ok.

I’m going through a similar situation, but I’m not sure I completely agree with my OBGYN. I had my period Jan 17-23rd. Just yesterday (7 days after my period ended) I started getting menstrual-like cramps after I woke up, and later that day I started bleeding again. I had a mucousy-white discharge with blood in it. I don’t know what prompted me to do it, but I took a HPT (Clear Blue Digital) and it said pregnant. I was not expecting this because we’ve been taking ovulation tests every day for 2 months with no sign of ovulating. I took another test this morning, and it showed not pregnant.

I went in to my OBGYN clinic and the doctor didn’t even examine me…she just blurted that she firmly belives I had a chemical pregnancy. She did have blood drawn for a beta test, which I won’t get back until Monday, but I left with a very empty feeling. When things of this nature happen, do they not examine you or schedule an U/S?

    Help!!

    • rowanthefrog says:

      Hi Jessica,

I’m sorry for what you have been through. Unfortunately it does sound like a chemical pregnancy. Generally you wouldn’t see anything on a ultrasound until you are at least 5-6 weeks pregnant, and if you are already getting a negative pregnancy test then it does sound like a chemical pregnancy. I’m sure you have gotten your blood test results back at this point so you know what happened. I’m so sorry….I hope that is your first and last experience with a chemical pregnancy and that your next one brings a healthy baby into your arms.

Yes, a chemical pregnancy is a pregnancy that terminates before you see anything on an ultrasound, typically before 5.5 weeks (or 3.5 weeks if counting from ovulation.)

If it was chemical, wouldn’t I get my period?

    • rowanthefrog says:

      Casey,

Usually urine tests at the doctor are less sensitive than FRER or other HPTs…odd but true. Has she run your beta HCG (blood test?) You won’t get a period until your HCG gets close to 0. I would think you would be pretty close if you are getting negative HPTs. If you haven’t already gotten your period you might want to ask for some bloodwork. Your OB can also prescribe some birth control pills to re-regulate your cycle and bring your period back.

Hello! I’ve stumbled upon your blog and I’ve skimmed through quickly (searching for answers) as I believe I’ve been going through a similar situation.

    Brief History:
-Healthy pregnancy and now 2 year old after trying for 2 months – June 2012
    -Miscarried around 8.5w – December 2013
-Started to “try” again after having two normal periods – March 2014
-Period was late after trying in March, but never received a positive result that time.
    -Tried in April/May
-Tried June and received a faint positive – went in for blood draws, low #’s and ended up getting period
-Tried July and received a faint positive – went in for blood draws, low #’s and ended up getting period
-Had recurrent miscarriage panel done, everything is normal
-Had ultrasound done, everything looked good – this was done 3 weeks ago about the time I would have been ovulating and the tech mentioned that it looked like I had ovulated, not sure she was 100% sure, BUT it sounded confident. The thickness of the lining was 5.83MM (is this good or bad for that timeframe???)
-We tried during that timeframe and sure enough – I received a faint positive last week and ended up getting my period – 4 days late.

so, on all of these i’ve never made it quite to 5w, but do receive a faint positive AFTER i’m supposed to get my period, before actually getting it.

I just wanted your input – specifically around the thickness of the lining and where I should go from here. Currently, my OB says “well, we know you can have a healthy pregnancy and delivery and we know that you can get pregnant and these are most likely caused by chromosomal issues” But 3 in a row?

Thanks for listening – I would love to hear back from you!

    • rowanthefrog says:

      Hi Kaleigh,

I’m so sorry for your losses and thank you for posting. I think a healthy lining immediately post-ovulation should be a minimum of 6mm (and preferably at least 8-15mm.) Depending on how far you were post-ovulation it could be too thin. I would recommend seeing an RE if you aren’t already. Keep us posted.

hi I feel for you all as I feel the same and know what your all going thought. I found out I was pregnant the day my period was due as I had been trying. I started bleeding only light 3 days later went to doctors who sent me for scan which would of been two days later. pain was getting worse and bleeding heavier I went to a&e was examined and was told a lot of bleeding was going on. I had bloods done and my levels were 9 . midwife said I was very early pregnant or miscarriaged. I’ve lost a lot of clots and very scared. I was only 4&1/2 weeks. bleeding is very light now. I’m scared to do another test incase comes back positive as I really don’t want a d&c. feel sick but hoping that is anxiety. midwife have asked me to test in two weeks which is a week now? any advice please? I know I’m not pregnant now as that feeling has gone. thanks

      Hi Debbie,

I’m sorry for the delayed response to this post. I suspect that by now you know that your pregnancy is now gone and I’m so sorry for your loss. What you have described sounds like a classic chemical pregnancy. I don’t have much advice, I’m just sorry. Take a month off from trying and then try again if you are up for it. I hope your next pregnancy brings a sweet baby into your arms.

This page was very helpful. I just experienced my first & only miscarriage (that I am aware of) knowing how common this is & knowing we’re able to concieve & im able to carry to full term (20mo rotten little boy at home) makes me feel better. Aunt flow was due 9/4, took hpt 9/11 & was a faint positive. Another 9/12 & 9/13 (9/13 was a morning urine, other two were not) & was surprised when that was also very faint. Went to the womens center for a test on 9/16 which was also very faint the lady said. That didnt seem right to me (my tests were all 3 bright & shiny positives with my son before my missed period) & I was experiencing a lot of cramping but no bleeding. I expressed my fears to her after coming off Mirena in mid June 2014, (cycle started about two weeks later). My hormone levels should have been rising & the tests should have been getting darker. Started bleeding on 9/19 & confirmed miscarriage on 9/20. Ultrasound showed my body is handling it well, no D & C needed, hormone levels are fine (blood hgc was only a 4, which leads me to believe they had been dropping over the past week or so) uterus is at a normal size. My bleeding hasnt been too bad, about what I would experience on my period. My husband gives it 10wks & he’ll have me knocked up again lol (; (he said id be pregnant 8wks after having Mirena removed & he was right on the $$) Im dying to try again ASAP, concieved my son just 2mo after 6yrs of being on the pill. Im sure ill get pregnant again before the end of the year, I just dont want it to be too soon & lose another baby … def can be stressful. I just wanted to share my story, & god bless all of you in your journey to motherhood !

    Hi,

I miscarried (CHEMICAL PREGNANCY – SAB)in 6th week(Nov 8 2013)(First pregnancy) and my Medical practitioner asked me to wait for my next periods and then try for baby… but we tried From April 2014 only , every month i used to o pregnancy test before expected date of my periods hoping i’ll get positive result and when i took the home test on 17th Aug 2014 its negative again so i booked DR.appointment to clarify if everything is OK with me.On Aug 21st i had Sore breast so i took pregnancy test again on Aug 22nd… and the result was Positive …we both were happy and this time i tried to change my hospital so i got appointment for 8th week only(Sept 9th 2014) they said my urine test results shows very thin line in hospital(but in home pregnancy test i got thicker may be in early tester they might do something to alert even the HCG is low)so they asked for blood work, 9/9 and 9/11 i went for blood work and on 9/12/2014 they said my HCG is increasing but not up to the expected level(for 8th week and they didn’t tell the counts even when i asked for)so you are going to miss the pregnancy suddenly the whole hospital seems to be dark room for me, its not easy to explain how hard it was, some how my husband managed to ask questions. he asked is it possible to increase HCG counts through injections? and she said its not possible and we asked for ultra sound and she rudely replied you wont see anything but still i’m giving you appointment for Saturday(Sep 13 2014) and i went for ultra sound without any hope… there came a surprise,i saw a heart beat,it was 170 🙂 but the ultra sound person said it looks like 6 weeks(i was 8 weeks) but still its not a problem some will ovulate late ,depends on long cycle. she said everything is perfect in scan. On Sunday i had few spots, very little but only for an hour. On Monday(Sep 15) i got a call from hospital, they said, everything is perfect and your next scan is on Oct 1st 2014.and till that they didn’t gave Dr.appointment and i took NATURE”S MADE PRENATAL and ONE A DAY MULTI-VITAMIN. I asked them for prescribed prenatal they said DR. will check u on Oct1 and she will tell. On Tuesday(SEP 16th) i started to bleed dark RED colour, and immediately i called hospital they gave appointment to meet DR. on the same day afternoon. DR. congratulated me and said good u saw heart beat. and she enquired about bleeding and went for both abdominal and internal ultra sound AND SHE COULDN’T FIND HEART BEAT AND SHE SAID YOU ARE having low HCG, i can understand its second loss for you, im sorry for that. and he asked for DNC and we said let it go like last time. and she asked to collect the fetus in some sample box. immediately after 2 days it passed with very worst pain(bot fetus and sac) i collected and gave to my DR. after 2 weeks i got a call saying the chromosome for both of us normal and everything with the fetus is ok… for further testing they asked me to come after next periods.. after reading your blog i’m getting hope… booked appointment for 30th October 2014, will keep you posted…..

    • rowanthefrog says:

      Hi Nancy,

I suspect by now you know the answer to your question and I’m sorry I couldn’t reply sooner. I have known of many instances where a doctor’s test isn’t as sensitive as the home pregnancy tests we can buy. Bleeding, while scary, isn’t ALWAYS bad, but it can be. When was your last period? 31. Candace says:

I am currently experiencing a chemical pregnancy. A few weeks ago my breasts became sore and swollen. I had to go out an buy new bras because I went up a cup size. I started to think maybe this is it! My husband and I have been trying since January this year. We have one healthy 4 year old, but I had one miscarriage when I was 20 at 10 weeks. I’m 35 now. Anyway, I took two pregnancy tests and both came back a very faint positive. The second test was lighter than the first though which seemed strange to me. I was having some cramping and kept feeling like something wasn’t right. My cramping started to become more painful and sharp as the time passed. I noticed some pink blood when I wiped, so I figured I wasn’t pregnant. I put in a tampon and was depressed for the rest of the day. Later that night, the blood became heavier and turned red instead of pink. The cramping became harder as I tried to sleep. This morning I took out my tampon and out came what looks like an egg that didn’t form. It was mucus, bloody and kind of like a gel. I looked up a chemical pregnancy photos and what I had looks exactly like it. I am deeply saddened by this loss and realized this same thing happened to me over the summer. I never tested then, but had the same thing happen. I chalked it up to just having a heavy period and didn’t tell my doctor. We will keep trying, but I just feel incredibly dumfounded that we can’t seem to get pregnant. I took Clomid once so far, but didn’t get any last month because I had back problems. I am in physical therapy right now for it. I guess I don’t need the Clomid to get pregnant. I just want another healthy baby to add to our family.

    • Candace says:

I want to note that after I passed the chemical pregnancy, the sharp cramping stopped.

    • rowanthefrog says:

      Hi Candace,

I’m so sorry for your loss. It sounds to me like you were possibly 5-6 weeks pregnant but experienced a miscarriage and you tested as your HCG was already going down. An actual “chemical pregnancy” there is rarely anything that comes out because it doesn’t have a chance to form. That doesn’t make it any less devastating and I’m so sorry that you have gone through this. I would encourage you to share both of your losses with your doctor and push for a Recurrent Pregnancy Loss panel and see what comes up. Please keep us posted.

    • rowanthefrog says:

      Felicia,

I’m sorry for your loss. Without knowing your actual ovulation dates it’s hard to say, but generally you ovulate about 9-14 days from the start of your period and your fertility window is, at most, 5-6 days before you ovulate. Are you charting your cycle?

    Hi,
I had chemical pregnancy last week. This was my first pregnancy ever 😦
I came to know that I had cp after reading the blog! My question is, do I need to take ultra sonography to check for complete termination or is it normal to terminate completely naturally? I would like to plan soon and I will wait for one cycle as everyone says. Now my mind is running about complete termination or not? Here they don’t do test without any complications. So please do let me know.

    • rowanthefrog says:

      Mona,
I’m so sorry for your loss. Chemical pregnancies generally end too early to ever see anything on an ultrasound. I would expect a heavier than normal period. Wait for another period and then you can try again. If it takes you longer than 90 days to have another period then I would see the doctor. I hope that helps.

I am a 33 years old married woman having an 8 year old son. He was born after a cesarean. My husband is 38 years old. We are ttc from 11 months but to no success. Though I suffered 4 chemical pregnancies. I visited an on/gyn after first CP. He couldn’t find any cause in my blood work or scan and prescribed multivitamins, dhea and epo. Then I visited a fertility specialist after my third CP. She tested me for thyroid, infections, prolactin, diabetes, hb and report came up normal except hb level low(9). My ultrasound scan was normal but she added one line lately that endometrial lining appears irregular but I could find her saying it with surity. She prescribed me oosure, methylfolate cobalmin folic acid, vitamin E. But now I am experiencing my 4th chemical pregnancy. I feel quite hopeless and disappointed. Plz advise what are the chances that I can carry on a full term pregnancy with increasing age.

I wish I could tell you your chances, 33 years is not old, at all, but I know age starts to be a factor. What exactly did they say was wrong with your endometrial lining? It sounds like you have done all the testing which is good. Did you get your lining checked before ovulation? Please let me know.

No, I didn’t. She called me for hysteroscopy to see if any polyps are there. But I couldn’t fix an appointment for that. should I go for it? Is it possible that polyps are there but not visible in trans vaginal scan? what should be the right treatment for me?

      • Surbhi J says:

I just checked my scan, my endometrial lining was 4.4 mm on cd10. I generally used to have 28 day cycle. But after these chemical pregnancies my cycles changed to 29-30 days.

4.4mm is pretty thin for day 10, have you asked for estrogen to help build your lining?

I don’t know a lot about pregnancies but Im pretty sure this happened to me only I’m just now realizing what happened and to tearing me apart. I felt as if I might be pregnant but I didn’t take any tests but I was always lookin up symptoms to the point it looked like I was paranoid, I really believed I was and I was getting excited. My dream is to have kids. About a week after getting this feeling I had some light bleeding so I was wearing a panty liner and when I went to switch it this thing was in my pad. I didn’t know what it was it looked like a piece of me had fell out, I looked up what a early miscarriage would look like and that is exactly what I found. My heart is broken and I’m not even sure if that’s what happened. I’m healthy so i don’t know what would be falling out of me but after doing some research I’m pretty sure I had a chemical pregnancy.

I too experienced a chemical pregnancy this week. It was very strange because my tests got darker not lighter so I was very surprised to start bleeding – I tested Sunday with a faint line, Monday a faint but darker line, Tuesday darker still but a negative digital and then a big fat positive on a digital test Wednesday – I was stoked. My husband and I were so happy to continue growing our family and then Thursday morning I started bleeding. It was crazy because my levels were still going up as of Tuesday to Wednesday to go from neg to pos digital but then there we were losing the pregnancy the very next day. Friday lab work first thing in the morning determined no trace of hcg. It was like in a flash we went from buying our daughter a big sister shirt to just nothing. It’s a very strange thing to feel the need to validate your pregnancy too. I feel like other people in my life are seeing this as a false positive or something disappointing but not a true loss. I’m trying to stay positive by believing if the pregnancy was not healthy then it is better it happened so soon but it’s still so so sad. My dr said no reason we can’t try again next month since my levels are back to normal so quickly. Here’s to hoping for a healthy pregnancy next month.

Three days ago I had three positive test but the next day I got two negative so me and my husband decided we needed to go to my Dr. when we got on the road we found out the truck didn’t have breaks. We pulled in at a gas station and ended up hitting a rail hard. I immediately started bleeding bad way worse than my normal period. When I finally made it to the Dr. they did a urine test that came back negative and told me that it was a chemical pregnancy but didn’t explain it. Will I be ok to try again this month?

Had 2m/c’s at 7 weeks at 17 and 18 years old. I went on to have a healthy son when I was 19. At 20 I had a blighted ovum at 12 weeks. At 22 started ttc again. 9 months later my period (which was on time) lasted 3 weeks. Went to hospital, only to find out I had been pregnant. I’m now 41, I have had over 50 documented chemical pregnancies. My doctors have said I have definitely had many more. Just got tired going to doctors. Progesterone suppositories and injections didn’t do much for my uterine linning. I was on cycle day 24 on the day of the 2 endometrial biopies, while on the progesterone. One biop said I was on day 15 and the other was day 18. That’s on the highest amount they could prescribe. Genetic testing came back normal, structure is my uterus is normal. Between all of this I had an ectopic, at 26. I had gotten my period that cycle too. My hcg wasn’t the normal high but for me is was off the charts. I knew it was in my tube but my doc wanted to hold out hope. He said “you ovulated from your right side and your left tube is blocked. It wouldn’t have been able to get into that tube” well, surprise. I was right. It got sucked into my left tube. 5 weeks and 6 days it lasted. Being 41 now, I don’t have much hope. I do not have insurance that covers IVF, anymore. Besides, the progesterone didn’t work. So if you see a teen whom is pregnant, don’t look down on them (everyone did when I was pregnant). It might be her only shot to have a baby. I would just love to have an answer as to why. Why 20 years of so many losses. Not one doctor can even remotely give me an answer.

Hi everyone. Im very new to this, i had recently went off the bc pill in may of 2015. I had 2 regular periods in june and july. I had what i think was my period on the 8th of august and have been spottin/bleeding since. No breaks inbetween. It is now september 27th 2015. I thought i was having a very irregular period because of the pills, but went to the doctor just incase. On august 25th i did a urine test which came back inconclusive so i just assumed i wasnt pregnant. Then on wednesday, september 16th, 2015, i decided to take a hpt and it read positive. So i went to the dr the following monday to have it confirmed. The dr also said the bleeding was normal for some women. I was weary on the bleeding so i decided to get a second opinion and they gave me urine test and blood work. I wasnt sure how far along i was since i wasnt sure if i was having a period on the 8th of august because it was ongoing. So the first dr said it would be about 5-6 weeks pregnant. Anyway, i got blood work from my second opinion dr and he said unless i was only a couple weeks pregnant the hcg hormones were too low for 7 weeks. It was at 60 and he said it should be around 10,000. So i have an appointment for an ultra sound and blood work tmr to see if the levels doubled. He said if they didnt it meant i wasnt going to have a complete pregnancy. Im very upset but am trying to grasp at straws in hopes that the levels do rise, im just looking to see if anyone had a similar experience as mine weather its good or bad. Im preparing myself for the worst at the moment.

I experienced a chemical pregnancy my last period was April 3rd, my periods are always on time. I’m regular for the most part. I tested a week before my period for May got positive results, tested again just about a week later got negative. I went to the doc, they told me it was a chemical. It’s not may 20, no bleeding, nothing. I was having unprotected sex since. I want to know is it possible I could get pregnant during this time even though I haven’t had any bleeding? Very confused.

      Jordan,

I’m so sorry for your loss and I remember keenly feeling like my soul was leaving my body after my first CP. It’s so so tough. It’s ok to grieve. The good news is that most people go on to have a successful preganncy after a chemical, including me! I was pregnant 4 weeks after my first chemical pregnancy and that little boy is now 8! Hope your next pregnancy brings a beautiful baby into your arms.

I am hoping for the best for you. All of my chemicals have been like what you are talking about. 3-5 weeks of bleeding and low HCG levels. I got my period the day it was due but the bleed kept on coming. It’s horrible. Again, I wish you the best.

I’m 18 and I lost my virginity last month. My period was due a week after that but it never came. We didn’t use condoms but I had taken a pill a day before. When my period didn’t come even two weeks later, I took a pregnancy test but I’m not sure if it was invalid or not. There were two EXTREMELY faint lines. So I took another test and it showed a clear negative. So I went on with my life. But I have been noticing weird symptoms that my friends claim look pregnancy-ish. (I had a strong desire to eat peanut butter sandwiches with bbq sauce once) But well, I got my period yesterday except that it’s extremely painful and much heavier than ever before. I don’t understand what’s happening. I SHOULDN’T be pregnant considering the fact I used precaution. I have been ignoring everything because of that negative but after reading the comments above, I’m not so sure anymore… Somebody please explain what’s happening?! Is it even possible to get pregnant after taking a pill? And it’s been a whole MONTH!!! How can it possibly be a chemical pregnancy (if I am pregnant in the first place) Please help me, I’m really scared

I started spotting on the 26th day of my cycle. I have a 32 days cycle. On the 5th day (31days of my cycle)I visited my doctor and had a urine pregnancy test which was positive but the ultra sound couldn’t show anything. The next day I had my period with a heavy flow for three days. Can someone explain to me what is happening to me?

    • Caren says:

First things you should have done is a blood test to check your progesterone levels and different times during your cycle. The other test is an endometrial biopsy. It’s a very quick scraping of the lining of the uterus between days 21-24 of your cycle. It to check to see if is is on or near the right cycle day. I’ve had 3. Some I was taking progesterone and some I was no taking anything. All tests were done onday 24. The lining came back saying it was on day 15, 19, and 21. Progesterone helps with thickening the lining. Good luck.
